Rough rides over the Midwest

While the jetstream usually only causes light to moderate turbulence, due to an unusual pattern, a lot of planes encountered rough rides today. Reports from Boeing 717s, CRJs, an MD82, reported severe turbulence at altitudes in the 20,000s.

Airmets for 9/23/2006

An independent analysis using Flightaware flight paths, indicates to me that Northwest Airlines still continues to be your best bet for a smooth flight, as they have the best forecasting abilities and continue to avoid turbulence better than the other airlines.

As a reminder, severe intensity means: Occupants are forced violently against seat belts or shoulder straps. Unsecured objects are tossed about. Food service and walking are impossible.
