A strong jet stream is making for very miserable passengers today, October 28th, 2006. Edit: A remark in a pilot report that you would never want to see:

Wow… so, as someone who has experienced some of this terrible turbulence, would any of this stuff been strong enough to bring down one of those planes? I was shocked to read the pilot’s comments “couldn’t control the aircraft” what exactly does that mean? How frequent are time like that??

It is extremely unlikely that turbulence would “bring down one of those planes”. The pilots comment “couldn’t control the aircraft” doesn’t mean it was a safety issue, it was just a little more rough than usual and most of the times it’s just easier to ride it out as opposed to fighting the controls. Airplanes are built to withstand a lot of “punishment” and it’s nothing to worry about, although the ride would have been unpleasant, as long as you are belted in, you are safe.
