Southwest Airlines uses an interesting strategy to save money during the summer months. As regular visitors know, the jet stream shifts to the north during the summer, resulting in generally smoother flights. Southwest uses this fact to fly more flights every day.

A line of thunderstorms, north to south, blocks travel

A long line of thunderstorms ahead of a cold front reaching all the way from north to south is making travel west to east very difficult in the US. Many airports are under delays as the storms roll through, including ORD and DTW. While planes will not travel through storms, sometimes things can get quite turbulent as you pass them.
