Strong Winds and Mountains Equals Severe California Turbulence

Very strong winds over the western half of the United States today is turning the air into a severe turbulence soup. Many planes are reporting severe turbulence. When winds are strong and in the right direction, the mountains will send the turbulence up in the air, and there will be no altitude that isn’t effected.

Flew back from the East Coast this day (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL43/history/20080104/1355Z/KEWR/KLAX) and it was essentially a smooth flight. Spoke to the pilots as I enjoy doing before my flights and among other things asked them how our flight looked in terms of weather, ride, etc.

They said it looked pretty good with only a forecast of light to moderate chop about 40 min. out from LAX. Fortunately, the forecasted rain hadn’t arrived either though it was cloudy. Other than 5-10 min. of the 75′ doing a light to occasionally moderate dance as we neared LAX just before we descended, it was a good flight!
