Six people were taken to local hospitals after a United Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Chicago hit severe turbulence early this morning and was diverted to Denver.
Several of the people injured were members of the flight crew, so the plane was delayed while another crew took over the flight, Denver International Airport spokesman Chuck Cannon said.
Cannon described the injuries as “fairly minor,” such as complaints about back pain.
The plane landed at DIA around 3 a.m., and paramedics were called to check on passengers, he said.

Air Canada Flight 190 may have hit a very rare phenomenom called an ‘Atmospheric Bore’, a sort of tidal wave in the sky. They are exceptionally rare.
A rogue aerial wave known as an atmospheric bore may have thrown an Air Canada jetliner into a series of rolls and dives that injured 10 people and knocked out part of the airplane’s computer system this week.
University of Western Ontario physics professor Wayne Hocking, an expert in atmospheric turbulence, said conditions in the area where the Airbus A319 was thrown out of control Thursday morning were likely to produce the rare and powerful phenomenon, which he described as a high-altitude version of a tidal bore.

Explaining the turbulence, the pilot said they had hit a significant amount of windshear on the approaches. On the flight back, Snyder noticed the same crew working onboard the plane. When he mentioned to one of the flight attendants that he had been on the “windshear” flight, her face turned ghostly white. “I’ve never been so scared before,” the flight attendant confessed. And then she said, “I thought we were going to crash.”

Another day, another opportunity to evaluate choices made by the airlines for passenger comfort. While no one would praise Northwest for in flight amenities, that hardly matters if the plane you are on is shaking in the mountain wave air. Right now, there are a lot of reports of moderate turbulence over Colorado, and that makes it easy to evaluate the airlines. Using FlightAware, I tracked flights who regularly fly over Colorado for the most efficient route. Comparing that route to routes taken today show a lot about which airlines care the most about your comfort.
Compare the path that Northwest 1191 takes in comparison the regular routes taken. On this graphic, NWA1191 is the green line. The regular flight path is in red. The shaded area indicates turbulence activity.
Northwest takes top prize for turbulence avoidance by flying completely around the area with a wide berth. Southwest gets a close second, as they flight a bit south of the area.
Delta does alright on some flights, flying around the area, and some fly through the area.
And the losers of this challenge: United, American, US Airways, Spirit, all flew right through. While not a safety issue, it is a comfort issue. Even if Northwest charges slightly more, consider where you spend your airfare money next time you fly, and reward the airlines that go the extra mile to ensure a smooth flight and your comfort.

Very strong winds over the western half of the United States today is turning the air into a severe turbulence soup. Many planes are reporting severe turbulence. When winds are strong and in the right direction, the mountains will send the turbulence up in the air, and there will be no altitude that isn’t effected.

South African Airways has apologised to a passenger after she broke a leg when her flight from Washington hit turbulence.
Ronel Stevens was on flight SA 208 from Washington on November 24, when the aircraft encountered turbulence.
“I was asleep, stretched out over two seats when the aircraft hit an air pocket. My foot got caught in the armrest and broke in two places, above my right ankle.”
Turbulence Forecast reminds you that injuries usually only happen in turbulence when you are not properly fastened in your seat. This passenger was laying across seats and her leg was broken in the armrest.

During the busiest travel weekend of the year, it looks like travelers will only be subject to minimal turbulence. Most flights are currently reporting only light, and a few reporting moderate. Looking forward, Turbulence Forecast expects most flights will only hit light, and a small percentage of flights will hit moderate for this travel weekend. Not a bad forecast for this time of year. Delays also appear to be minimal, but may increase for the weekend. Be sure to check with your airlines website for the latest travel information.
