Due to a passing storm system, a strong jet stream, and strong winds on the ground, many flights are experiencing moderate or better turbulence. Buckle up! You might also like to listen to ATC, see this blog post.

Thanks to LiveATC, you can listen to flights battling turbulence as they fly through a storm system over the plains. Go to this page and scroll down until you see ZKC (Kansas City air traffic control center), and listen.

When I started looking at the maps everyday nearly 3 years ago, I never imagined I’d see such a clearly defined line of turbulence that correlates so closely to the weather. Usually, turbulence is unpredictable, correlating somewhat loosely to the jet stream or a frontal system, but what you see below shows a very unusual and excellent correlation between weather and storms. As you get nearer to the storm system in the plains states, the air is more and more disturbed in a clear pattern, turbulence going from smooth, to light, to moderate severe, depending on how close you are to the storm system. See below. Turbulence is, by definition, chaotic, but there is some semblance of order here.

This just came across the pilot reports of turbulence:

EWR UUA /OV CAT/TM 2010/FL100/TP CRJ2/RM LIGHTING STRIKE-LOST PART OF WINGLET-ZNY CWSU
Not to worry though, planes are built to handle lightning.
Meanwhile, many planes on the Eastern half of the US are experiencing moderate-severe turbulence due to jet stream and weather.

As winter looms nearer, a strengthening jet stream is causing light to moderate turbulence for jets over the midwest and northeast parts of the country. You might consider today’s reports as a preview of the upcoming winter travel season.

A tropical storm is modeled to be heading straight for the eastern seaboard this weekend. If this is the case, expect long delays, flight cancellations, and bumpy rides in and out of the area.

A large high pressure system and a mainly dormant jet stream up to the north means smooth flights for the vast majority of US travelers this weekend. You really can’t ask for much better. Towards the south, weather won’t quite be as good with some storm systems moving through, but usually with skillful air traffic control and pilots, flights should be relatively smooth through most areas of the US.

If you are flying anywhere in the eastern half of the country, expect long delays and cancellations as a large and powerful storm system limits flying routes.

The weather and jet stream activity of today makes for very interesting analysis of airlines and their willingness to avoid turbulence. A previous blog post from December 13th, 2006 showed that Northwest Airlines did the best job in avoiding turbulence. A look today shows much of the same. Only Northwest seems willing to avoid turbulence the most, as compared to other airlines. You can always investigate this yourself by visiting FlightAware and seeing the routes that planes take. Just type in two city pairs and have a look.
