I recently was told about an in-flight experience.
My friend's brother-in-law was flying (don't remember where to) but experienced an "air pocket" as it was explained to him. They lost 2000 ft of altitude, the stewardess was "stuck to the celiing" and trays were "floating." He said everyone was crying and yelling. He said he fell for a good minute. I have heard a similar story from a friend. I am extremely afraid of flying to begin with, and this did not help. Is this possible? What does it mean? And does that happen often? Does that make it risky for the plane to go down?

Even if the story was exactly like it was recounted, it is extremely unlikely to happen. It certainly is possible for a plane to drop altitude suddenly and give the floating/stuck to the ceiling thing, but it's usually brief.

Airplanes are also very tough, designed to take much more force than one would think. If you look over in the blog, you'll see a post where they are testing the wing of the 777.

As long as you are safety buckled in, you will be as safe as you possibly can be.

Thank you... Obviously it is much harder to convince me of the safety.. I appreciate it though.
