My apologies. I'm supposed to depart on 3/15 at 8:45am from Newark on Continental (COA). I'm a little freaked out especially since a severe weather alert (due to strong winds) has been issued for the entire NYC and NJ area. I'm considering changing our flight to Thursday. Is this ridiculous?

Thanks for your patience with me. I feel like a complete weirdo for being this nervous....

Hello there. I cleaned up and deleted the duplicate threads. Now for a forecast.

I just got back today on a IAD-DTW-FNT run. Winds at all three airports were gusting up to 35mph, (you are scheduled for wind gusts up to 45mph). I have to say that the flight from IAD-DTW was not that bad. Takeoff from IAD was ok, and landing in DTW had some bumps, but fortunately, it was ok. Now, the last leg, DTW-FNT was actually bumpy enough to qualify for light classification by the pilot. On this 50 or so mile segment, the plane stayed at 4000 ft (an Airbus A319). So I was in it for 21 minutes, the entire length of the flight. It wasn't enjoyable, but it was ok.

Ok, now for the main point of the forecast. You are taking off in a high wind situation in a fairly large jet (737). The climb will be bumpy, for about 3-5 minutes. You'll soon be above the winds, and I suspect the rest of the flight will be ok.

PS: In this kind of conditions, try to sit as close to the front of the plane as possible. I was up front, but I could tell that the tail end of the plane was whipping around during the wind gusts.

Enjoy Miami. It's certainly nice and warm down there.

Thanks so much for your report on my EWR-MIA trip. And thank you for being patient with my duplicate threads! We've decided to change our trip so we will leave on Thursday. From the looks of it, flights will be delayed tomorrow morning and it might also spare me the anxiety of an undoubtedly extremely bumpy trip (even if it's just for the early part of the trip). I'm really embarassed about being this anxious...Hopefully I'm not the first person to change a flight due to wind!

Like my fear, I dont think your fear is really about your perception of good flying conditions vs. the experts. Its just flying in general. If they are going to fly, it will be just as ok in questionable weather as it would be in perfect conditions. If they are going to fly, its all good
