I was scheduled to fly out of Chicago tonight at 5:30pm but my flight was cancelled due to "air traffic control" issues. The American Airlines agent mentioned that O'Hare air traffic control has been cancelling numerous flights. Any idea why? I know that weather is expected in the Northeast, but I hear it's not that bad currently. My fellow would-be passengers and I thank you for any insights you might have.
We've been re-scheduled for tomorrow morning at 8:05am.

ORD is a major hub for both United and American. United also has a hub at IAD, American calls JFK and LGA focus cities. There is a large line of storms going through the northeast, and routes around storms can be limited. With the Northeast corridor being so busy, it just causes a lot of cancellations, nothing to worry about.
Take a look at this radar image:

It simply isn't possible to fly around storms when they cover so much area.
See my blog post (thank you for the tip)
