whats the diff betwn boeing 747 and 744?

Im flying via a Boeing 744 on friday LAX to manila Philippines.Im wondering what the difference is between these two models. Is the 744 smaller than the 747? Will it make a dffrence with the turbulence?

The last digit refers to the type of 747.

742 = 747-200
744 = 747-400

and so on. The 747-400 is as big as it gets, which helps.
